Blood-spill Averted Between Rivalry Protest Groups

It was almost like the Clash-of-Titans yesterday 11th August, 2017 when Pro-Buhari support group (Centre for Civil  Society and Justice) demonstrating support for Buhari and another group (coalition of Civil Society Organisations)  campaigning for the President’s immediate resumption of office or resignation, met at Abuja while both parties were rallying with their conflicting ideology. The immediate intervention of the Nigerian Police Force was a commendable move as it averted the calamity that would have befalls the Nigerian society as a result of this conflict.

The Centre for Civil Society and Justice campaigning with the theme; “Our Mumu Don Do” led by Nigerian Celebrity and Activist, Charly Boy has been carrying out a campaign for the president to resign or resume office at the Unity Fountain since Monday 7th August, 2017. The protest which has attracted other groups apart from the “Our Mumu Don Do” campaigners, also involves a group led by Deji Adeyanju, former social media director of the People Democratic Party (PDP), “Concerned Nigerians” group as likeminded team since three months ago. While the pro-Buhari groups began their solidarity and support match for the President on Thursday, 10th August, 2017. The president has been on medical vacation for more than 96 days.

The two opposing groups met at the Unity Fountain on Friday, and the hell was almost loose between the two before the police intercept.
It was reported that the Pro-Buhari group met the "Resume or Resign" campaigners at the Unity Fountain and taunted them with chants like, "Buhari kills corruption".
This is coming a day after President Buhari's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, branded the protesters
...an illegal assembly stealthily organised to deliver a blow to the war against corruption.
The “Resume or Resign” campaigners were attacked by the police on Tuesday, August 8, when officers fired gas canisters and water cannons that lead to many injured or hospitalised.

Most of 8th August protesters that were injured had to be rushed to the Federal Staff Clinic Federal Secretariat, while Charles Oputa also fainted as a result of the police officers action.

The group were not discouraged by the attack by the police, they rather continue their protest against the president on Wednesday 9th August and 10th August respectively.

The protesters' full demands are:
...that the president either personally or through his aides make the true detail of his health known to all Nigerians; that president should address all Nigerians in a language we can all understand on the true state of his health and other national issues; that he returns to the country and resume work as president of Federal Republic of Nigeria in order to lead us out economic and security quagmire we have been pushed into as a nation; if President Buhari fails, refuses and/ or neglect to do any of the above , then he should  resign from office; if he fails to honourably resign, then he should be impeached from office by the national assembly.
President Buhari left the country on May 7 to resume treatment for an undisclosed illness in London, leaving Acting PresidentYemi Osinbajo in charge of the country's affairs.
77 days after he left the country, pictures of President Buhari finally surfaced online when he met with state governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on July 23, at the Abuja House in London.
Since then, he has met with another delegation of Nigerian governors, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Earlier, on Sunday, 6th August, 2017, Aisha Buhari, the wife of the president travelled to London to meet with her husband, ahead of his return. It was reported in many sector that the president and his team have insisted that is return soon but however refused giving appropriate day for Nigerians as the day the Buhari will return.

The movie follows the story of Okoro, a simple gateman who was going through the trials of the lowest class of working class families in Nigeria.

He was indebted to his landlord to the extent where he was dehumanized, lost a right to his privacy and could no longer enjoy the quietness of his home.

Candidates curiously await JAMB's 2017 cut off point.

The release of this year’s admission cut-off points for courses in the nation’s universities, polytechnics and colleges of education by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on August 22, curiosity has taken over candidates who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

Candidates, who sat for the entry examinations are not stable in their hearts as they fear that the expected cut off points may be raised higher than 180 and 200 that had been maintained for three decades now.

Record has it that the general performances of candidates in this year’s examination has tremendous improvement over previous ones, with majority of the candidates scoring above 180, there are fears that the body may raise the admission benchmark in the universities to 200, given the high number of candidates who applied for limited admission slots in the universities.

According to Vanguard,
some candidates, who spoke on anonymity, expressed fears that in view of the general performance of candidates in the UTME, which they noted was better than last two previous years’, coupled with the high number of candidates that registered and sat for the examination, JAMB may raise the entry marks to between 200 and 220.

Ahead of the admission, the board had warned institutions against shortchanging candidates whose performances merited admission, saying it would not condone such act.
“The board will ensure that criterion set by Senate are strictly adhered to by the institutions’ admission officers and no shifting of goal post in the middle of the admission exercise,”JAMB had warned in a recent statement signed by Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin.
The statement said its warning was to “guarantee fairness and equity to all candidates.”

The expected policy committee meeting, according to JAMB, will be attended by all stakeholders, including vice chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics and monotechnics and provosts of colleges of education.
“The board has sent to all institutions a soft copy of printout of candidates who choose them. This year, the board has sent candidates who scored 100 and above in their JAMB to the institutions in its flexible admission policy for institutions to determine the suitability of the candidates in compliance with all laid down rules and regulations as determined by the proprietors of the institutions and approved by Senate of the various schools.

Buhari Dare Protesters... I won’t resign

There had been comments and reactions about continues absenteeism of Muhammadu Buhari from Nigeria for over 90 days. The recent action that has attracted the media and stakeholders is the call for Buhari resignation by Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, led by Charly Boy and Deji Adeyanju.

Earlier on Tuesday, 08 August 2017 Don.ng reports that Anti-Riot Police Squad fired tear-gas on the conveners of the call for the president’s immediate resumption of office or resignation if he is incapable of continuing duties as president of Nigeria. As a result, protesters including Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa (Charly Boy), the second son of former Supreme Court judge, Chukwudifu Oputa were injured, collapsed and rushed to the hospital.

However, on Monday, 7th August 2017, the president spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu that he will not resign as the law cannot find him wanting in terms of breach as a result of his absence in Nigeria for over 90 days.

The SSA in an interview with State House correspondents said those calling for the president to resume office or resign are doing that outside the laws of the country.

He made this statement as reaction to protests in Abuja by a coalition of civil society groups against the president's continued stay in London.

According to him, the protest lacks standing ground because Buhari handed over power to his vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and the National Assembly was also informed in writing.

They (protesters) are exercising their rights in line with the constitution of this country. Of what use or value is a democracy in which citizens cannot embark on peaceful protests? So, we respect their right to convene or undertake peaceful protest.

On the second issue, whether the president should resign or disclose or whatever, I think they are stepping outside the laws of this country. anyone conversant with the constitution of this country will have noticed or seen that Mr President has complied 100 percent with the requirements of the constitution of this country.

He has handed over power to the Vice President relying on the constitution and the Vice President is carrying out with the affairs of this country, undertaking activities of government in line with the constitution in a way that the president himself has given words of commendation.

So, the president has not breached any law. What he has done is perfectly in line with the constitution of this country and people are looking for things to say, I think they should do their research very well", the presidential spokesman said.

The President departed for the United Kingdom since May 7 for follow-up consultations with his doctors and is yet to address Nigerians masses on audio, video or pictorials about his current health status and their hope on his resumption.

Ozubulu Worshipers Massacre: The Story and Phone call by Muhammadu Buhari

Sunday 7th August, 2017 was a Black Day for the people of Ozubulu, the headquarter of Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State when gunmen stormed the Saint Philip Catholic Church at about 6am during the Morning Mass Celebration, shooting sporadically on worshipers which lead to the death and injury of many.
An eye witness who pleaded anonymity disclosed to Don.ng that the killers initially visited the residence of Chief Aloysius Ikegwuonu, popularly known as Bishop Ebubechukwuzo 1 of Ozubulu but on meeting his absence, the gunmen immediately drove to the Catholic Church close to his house in bid for searching him. Also meeting his absence at the church, the gunmen released series of fire on innocent worships.
Further finding by Don.ng landed our correspondent to the door of a worshiper at the St. Philip Catholic Church; Loveth Gift who witnessed the scene of the event, she described the gunmen as hoodlums wearing Army Uniform.
We all were in the church during the 6am Morning Mass today, we saw two cars that drove into the church; because it was a Church premises we never suspected them, we thought they were worshipers. But to the surprise of everyone, the car stopped at the gate in a way that it prevents closing of the church gate.

Suddenly, some men came out from the car, fully armed and all wearing military uniforms. I was lucky because I was sitting at the back, just beside the door, but I was clearly seeing what was happening.

The gunmen rushed into the Church through the front door.  I heard the sound of gunshots inside the church. So, I ran out of the building. The armed men presence at the front gate prevented people from using it as escape route.  Most women were unable to escape because using the alternative escape means is quite difficult for them. That was the reason why lot of women were killed in the massacre. Children were killed as well, many were seriously injured.
After I successfully escaped the crime scene, I attempted several calls to know the situation with other worshipers in the church but no respond by them”.

Also, another eyewitness and victim of the incident narrated her experience of the event to DON.ng in this tone,

All I could remember is that, I was sitting at the front when some people in Army uniform invaded the Church and shot at everyone at their sight. I luckily hide under the seat but was shot in the leg.
A boy was shot on his head; his brain erupted and his bloods spilled everywhere, even on my face.
Reacting to the invasion, the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, Anambra State has described the Sunday’s attack on worshippers by gunmen as irresponsible.
In a press statement signed by Rev. Hygi Aughaulor, the Director of Communications of the Diocese indicated that Rev Fr. Onwuaso Jude, the Parish Priest of Saint Philip Catholic Church, Ozubulu escaped uninjured. He described the invasion as an attempt by the forces of darkness to overshadow the light of God; He further assured the worshipers that they will triumph in every situation. Read him:
What on earth would make people open fire on innocent unarmed worshippers including children and women on a Sunday morning?
We condemn this ungodly act in its totality; we pray Almighty God to console the families affected and assure them that our hearts are with them as we pray for the quick recovery of the wounded.
For the entire parishioners, we call on them not to be discouraged in their usual practice of faith.
It is when the forces of darkness attempt to overshadow goodness that the light of God shines even brighter than ever just as it happened on Easter Sunday.
Evil may make attempts but God and goodness will always triumph; we call on the good people to continue to pray for the deceased worshippers and their families
Meanwhile, in a news conference at Awka on Sunday, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra state, Mr Garba Umar assured the people that the police would leave no stone unturned to bring the attackers to justice. He gave the updated figures of casualties as 11 dead and 18 injured.  The commissioner further ruled out the possibility of a terror attack, and spoke about an isolated feud between individuals in the community. He said that the police had invited some suspects who would be very useful to the investigation. Umar also assure the people of Anambra State that the place is safe for normal activities. He said:
At about 6.30 a.m. today, Aug. 6, I got a distress call that gunmen had invaded and shot at worshippers at St. Philips Catholic Church, Umuezekwe, Ofufe, Amakwa Village in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.
As a result I, the Commissioner of Police, led my operatives immediately to the scene to rescue worshippers.
The command, under my watch, will leave no stone unturned in locating and prosecuting those behind the massacre of innocent worshippers.
The intelligence report and preliminary investigation showed that the incident was as a result of a feud between two individuals from the same community living outside Nigeria.
One of the individuals built the church where the shooting occurred; it is definitely not a terrorist attack in the mould of Boko Haram or Fulani herdsmen attack. “The command will brief the public after investigation is concluded; I commiserate with all those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident. “I also encourage `ndi’ Anambra to be vigilant and to promptly report suspicious movements or strange observation of persons and actions in their localities to the security agencies.

Several reactions and condolence message had reached the desk of Don.ng over the Sunday’s Attack. Among them is the telephone call by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari who has been out the country for medical treatment for over 80 days.

Earlier, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Malam Garba Shehu, the President condemned the attack, describing the incident as
“an appalling crime against humanity and unspeakable sacrilege”. In the statement, the President said that “there was no justification whatsoever to target Church worshippers and kill them in cold blood.’’

Also, Shehu confirmed that the President had a telephone conversation with Gov. Obiano where he commiserated with him, families of the victims as well as the people of the state. He said:

“The President has just finished speaking to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, in the course of which he commiserated with him, the famines of the victims and the citizens of the state over the tragic shooting incident this morning.’’

Sympathising with the victims, Andy Oba called off his campaign and he had this to say:
This is an eye-opener that we need a better and effective administrative system that can adequately take care of security challenges and youth unemployment in the state,” Senator Uba stated while insisting Obiano is not capable of steering the security operation of the state in the right direction.
We must not allow such to continue, our people cannot be allowed to be snatched by the cold hands of death due to the activities of recalcitrant members of our society", he added.
The distinguished senator visited the victims at Access Specialist Hospital, Maternity Ozubulu and Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital Nnewi. He expressed deep shock and added that such incident must not be allowed to gain ground in Anambra state.

In effort to investigate the current position of the police on the invasion, Don.ng put a telephone call through to the Police Public Relation Officer of Anambra State, ASP Nkeiruka Nwode on Monday 7th August, 2017 at about 1:21 pm and she said no further discovery had been made for now but the dead bodies has been taken to the mortuary. She assured Don.ng that the command will relate any findings as soon as one is discovered.
